Sometimes – a lot of times – we, the ones who are supposed to be ministering to our patients, are the ones who are blessed. That happened at the clinic this week.
A young woman came in for her first dental appointment. I had seen her previously at the eligibility interview required for those who want to become patients at HOPE Clinic, and she stood out for many reasons. She was radiant, emitting a peaceful aura, and physically very beautiful despite the scars on her face and her missing right arm. Yet she said nothing about her appearance and did not note anything of significance on her health history.
While I was taking her initial x-ray and her vital signs, I asked her to tell me about the accident.
At one point in her life, this young woman had been held captive by sin. She was making bad choices, and was addicted to prescription drugs. One day, after drinking a few mixed drinks, she was driving 110 mph down I-45 and crashed her car. She wasn’t wearing a seat belt and was thrown for many yards from her vehicle. The burns on her body came from sliding down the pavement.
She said that immediately after the accident, she sat up – and her arm fell off. She looked up to the sky, and knew that she needed Christ in her life.
She suffered many injuries; every rib broken, vertebrae in her back and neck broken, collapsed lungs, burns, amputated arm. Doctors were not sure she would live, much less walk. After being in a coma and hospitalized for many months, she served a prison term. The last two years of her term were spent on the “Faith unit” because she turned her life completely over to the Lord.
I listened to her story, and a verse from scripture came to my mind. Job 5:17-18 says “But consider the joy of those corrected by God! Do not despise the discipline of the Almighty when you sin. For though he wounds, he also bandages. He strikes, but his hands also heal.”
She had been corrected by God, but did not despise her discipline. She was wounded, but healed by His hands. And she freely acknowledges that she would not be where she is today without His love.
She had to almost lose her life before she found eternal life. What a testimony this young woman has – and as she repeated her story for the other volunteers, we were all blessed and moved.
